This hard-working midfield player saw his first-team opportunities disappear at Fulham with the signing of John Collins and apart from a brief outing from the subs' bench against Barnsley he was restricted to appearing in the early rounds of the Worthington Cup and regular reserve-team football. Barnsley's new manager Nigel Spackman then swooped to bring him to Oakwell early in the new year. He settled in well, scoring on his debut with a tremendous 30-yard shot. He was a regular in the side before suffering a serious knee injury against Tranmere in March that kept him out of action for most of the 2001- 02 campaign. Hard working, strong in the tackle and the possessor of a vicious shot he mostly featured in the centre of midfield for the Tykes.
Steve was made available for transfer by Barnsley caretaker boss Glyn Hodges in January 2003.
