Another product of Crewe Alexandra's successful youth system, Steve returned to first-team action after missing the whole of the 1999-2000 campaign with a cruciate ligament injury.
He scored his first goal for the club in the Worthington Cup tie against Bury and went on to feature regularly during the season.
He is a powerful central defender who is effective in the air.
Steve signed a new three-year deal with Alex in June 2003.
He joined Burnley in July 2006 in a two-year deal before joining Barnsley in August 2007 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2010 in October 2008 and to June 2012 in March 2010.
Steve joined Tranmere Rovers in July 2013 with a two-year contract that was cancelled in August 2013.
