A fine attacking right back, Steve's first senior club was Birmingham City.
He soon earned a £300,000 move to Notts County and Fulham paid £600,000 for his services in 1998.
He joined Liverpool for £3.5 million in 2003 and by the 2004-05 season had become a key member of the team, contributing to the Champions League success.
Steve's contract at Liverpool was extended to June 2010 in July 2007.
He joined Portsmouth in July 2009 with a one-year contract.
