Burnley's captain and defensive colossus had another fine season in 2000-01. A commanding figure in the back three, Steve proved a match for most of the best strikers the First Division had to offer and it was significant that one of the Clarets heaviest defeats, 5-0 at Nottingham Forest, came on one of his very rare off-days. A fine sight bringing the ball out of defence, he kept up his fine record as a goalscorer adding another six in league and cup games. He is solid both in the air and on the ground and leads the team by example.
