Coppell was one of a long line of brilliant wingers to play for United. A complete footballer, he was virtually three men in one – a reliable defender, a tough tackler in midfield with a wide range of passes, finishing with pacy crosses or fierce shots. Amazingly consistent and fit, he set a club record with 206 consecutive league appearances (1977-81). He won one FA Cup in 1977.Coppell was capped 42 times for England. Regrettably he had to retire at 28 at the height of his powers with a serious knee injury. Later became a successful manager, notably with Crystal Palace, Brighton and Reading.
