Chettle was appointed club captain by Barnsley boss Dave Bassett at the start of the 2000-01 season and he remained a regular in the squad throughout the campaign despite being troubled by a niggling back problem. A cultured defender, he increasingly took on the role of mentor to the many youngsters introduced to the first-team squad and was always solid and reliable.
A popular figure with the club's fans he was awarded a one-year extension to his contract during the 2000-01 campaign but following the Tykes demotion to Division Two, Chettle joined Grimsby Town on a one-year contract in August 2002.
