McPhee made a favourable impression while on loan at St Mirren but was unable to break into the first team at Coventry City.
The Scotland Under-21 international joined Hull City in May 2005 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2008 in June 2006.
He joined Blackpool in January 2008 with a contract to June 2010.
McPhee announced his retirement in May 2010 due to a knee injury.
