After establishing himself in the first-team squad in 1999-2000, Leeds United's mercurial Irish midfield player suffered more than most in 2000-01 in an injury ravaged season for the club.
He featured in just ten games, appearing in the starting line-up on four occasions.
A talented midfield player with a sweet left foot, superb vision and the ability to unlock defences, having failed to agree a new contract, Stephen was made available for transfer by Barnsley in June 2006.
He joined Cardiff City in July 2006 with a three-year contract that was extended to June 2011 in August 2007 and to June 2013 in October 2010.
Stephen joined Sheffield Wednesday in September 2013 with a contract to January 2014 that was then extended to February 2014.
