Broad joined Southend United on loan just before the transfer deadline last season and made his debut in the 1-1 draw at Third Division champions Chesterfield. A composed character, he immediately formed a strong central defensive partnership with Phil Whelan and was a key figure in the Blues victory over Hartlepool which ended the Pool's 21-match unbeaten run. He produced some impressive displays being strong in the air and confident on the ground. Chelsea's youth team captain and a regular in the club's reserve team Broad looks to have an excellent future in the game. He joined Southend permanently in the summer of 2001.
