Having been released by Louhans-Cuiseaux at the end of the 1999-2000 campaign Stephane took advantage of the French players' union's pre-season training facilities and featured regularly for their select team in friendly games. He subsequently crossed the Channel to join Carlisle United and after impressing in a number of reserve games he was promoted to the first team. He went on to feature on a handful of occasions, netting a fine individual goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Cardiff, but with no permanent contract on offer he moved on for a trial at Rotherham. He made a brief appearance for the Millers as a substitute in the FA Cup win over Northampton Town but was again unable to win a long-term contract and he departed shortly afterwards.
