Stanislav Varga

Date of birth08 October 1972
Place of birthLipany
NationalitySlovak
Weight93 kg
Height1.85 m
PositionDefender

A giant central defender who joined Sunderland from Slovan Bratislava in the 2000 close season, Stan made his debut in the opening game against Arsenal and his first contribution was a 40-yard pass in the opening minutes to set up an attack.

Not surprisingly dominant in the air, his distribution from the back was excellent, but his season was turned on its head in the very next game at Manchester City when he was stretchered off with a torn leg muscle.

The injury developed complications due to internal bleeding and led ultimately to Stan requiring four operations.

He returned to first-team action by the end of October and scored his first goal for the Black Cats at West Ham United in January.

Stanislav returned to Sunderland in August 2006 with a two-year contract.
