Colosimo, who previously played for the Australian Institute of Sport and Victorian Institute of Sport, was linked with moves to Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Panathanaikos prior to his move to Manchester City. He also had a trial at Middlesbrough in October 2000. Infamously, Colosimo's move to European football was delayed in July 1999 when suffered a serious injury to his left knee via a rash challenge from Andy Cole in a friendly match between Australia and Manchester United. Capped at full and Under-23 levels, he captained Australia in the Youth World Cup in Nigeria in 1999 and also represented his country in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
