Regarded as one of the best players produced by the J-League, he went on to ply his trade in Holland.
Shinji rose to prominence as a teenager at Urawa Red Diamonds making his debut in 1997.
He quickly made his full international debut against South Korea in April 1998 and making a brief appearance in the 1998 World Cup finals.
He subsequently captained Japan's team when they reached the final of the World Youth Championships in 1999 before suffering a bad knee injury that kept him out of action for almost a year.
A talented midfield player who can play either in a central role or wide on the left, he came on as a late substitute in the 2000 Asian Cup final victory over Saudi Arabia.
At club level, he joined Feyenoord in the 2001 close season after turning down Borussia Dortmund.
