Smith had another excellent season in the Crewe Alexandra defence in 2000-01 when he was a near ever-present at left back. A hard-tackling defender with a no-nonsense attitude, he is an expert at delivering dead-ball kicks. Also the Railwaymen's penalty taker, his tally of four goals included two spot kicks in the 4-2 win over Burnley in February. His consistency throughout the campaign was recognised when he walked away with all the various supporters' 'Player of the Year' awards.
Smith rejected the offer of a new one year Crewe contract at the end of the 2001-02 season, and ended over ten years at Gresty Road by signing a two-year contract with Hull City.
Smith joined Rochdale in March 2004 with a contract to the end of the season.
