Shaun Goater

Goater first came to the attention of Alex Ferguson during a pre-season trip by Manchester United to Bermuda in 1989 and was subsequently signed as a trainee at Old Trafford. Unable to break into the United side he was given a free transfer to Rotherham five months later and eventually signed for Bristol City in July 1996 for £175,000. After 93 games and 43 goals at Ashton Gate, Joe Royle paid £400,000 for his services so The Goat became a Manchester City player in March 1998. He became Division One's top scorer with 29 goals in 1999-2000 - a big factor in City's return to the Premiership and also voted the supporters' Player of the Season. A highly prolific scorer at international level, netting 18 times in just 19 games for Bermuda which includes two hat tricks.

Goater, who was awarded a MBE in 2003 for services to sport and young people in Bermuda, joined Reading for £500,000 in August 2003 on a three-year contract that was cancelled in July 2005. He joined Southend United with a one-year contract.
