A predominantly right-sided midfielder, he has developed into a real talent. He began his career at Leca in 1994, spending one season at Falgueiras before signing for FC Porto in 1996. He made his international debut in November 1996 against the Ukraine and has been a regular squad member since. He won the Portuguese league title twice while at FC Porto before moving to Italy to play for Lazio in 1998 in a deal worth 6.4 million. Lazio won the European cup winners cup in 1999, but Sergio became part of the deal that took Herman Crespo to Lazio with him going in the opposite direction to Parma. He moved to current club Inter Milan in 2001 but has struggled to find his best form. A member of the successful team that played in the 2000 European championship finals he is sure to play in the midfield here. He is a player who can play as an out and out winger or as a ball winner in midfield and he also contributes goals from the midfield.
