Kehl began his career at Hannover 96 and became a regular member of the Germany Under-21 team before moving to Bundesliga club Freiburg in the summer of 2000.
He became the subject of a tug of war between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich finally signing for Borussia Dortmund in January 2001.
Kehl made his full international debut in May 2001 against Slovakia and soon a regular member of the squad.
An excellent reader of the game, he is a strong tackler and quick at getting forward.
