Thornton has represented Ireland at every level from Under-15 to Under-18.
A tribunal decided the fee for his move to Sunderland to an initial £225,000, rising to £625,000 depending on appearances.
A 15% sell-on clause was also agreed.
He was made available for transfer in May 2005 before his move to Doncaster Rovers for a club record £175,000 fee.
Thornton's contract at Leyton Orient was extended to June 2010 in June 2009.
