McCarthy again produced some powerful performances up front for Plymouth in 2000-01 despite having some disciplinary problems at times. He scored regularly too, finishing with a respectable tally of 11 goals including a brace in the 2-0 win over Devon rivals Exeter City in December. Towards the end of the campaign he switched to a role in the centre of defence where gave some competent performances but it remains to be seen whether this will be a permanent change of position.
