McAuley was Rochdale's left back in the 2000- 01 pre-season games, but Lee Todd's arrival relegated him to the reserves. He was appointed captain of the second string and was named as a substitute for the first team on several occasions but his only Third Division game of the season came at Southend in March. Unfortunately he suffered a knee injury just 15 minutes into the game which resulted in him being carried off and missing the remainder of the season.
