Houghton featured regularly for Southend under Alan Little in the opening games of the 2000-01 campaign but was sold to Leyton Orient shortly after new manager David Webb arrived at Roots Hall. Although injured on his debut at Torquay he soon returned and claimed the winning goal in the FA Cup replay against Norwich Victoria when the ball entered the net off his backside! He subsequently shared the left-wing slot with John Martin but appeared in the heartbreaking play-off final against Blackpool when he scored the O's second goal. A wide-left midfield player, on his day he is one of the finest crossers of the ball in the lower divisions. He was released by Leyton in January 2002.
