Collins was regarded as an automatic choice for Bury throughout much of 2000-01, despite struggling to find his best form at times.
However he limped out of the action with an achilles injury in the Shakers' home game against Notts County in March and missed the remainder of the campaign as a result.
Collins is a powerful central defender who is effective in the air and capable of some crunching tackles.
The younger brother of former Huddersfield Town defdender Simon Collins signed a new two-year contract at Port Vale in June 2004.
Collins joined Hartlepool United in January 2008 with a contract to June 2010.
His Pools contract was extended to June 2014 in May 2013.
