Diagnosed with a serious neck injury at the end of the 1999-2000 season, Ryan underwent surgery during the summer and was out of the Preston North End squad until returning as a substitute in the Worthington Cup tie at Coventry. Although a regular on the bench he only made six starts until April when he replaced the injured Michael Jackson in the line-up. Due a testimonial in 2001-02, Ryan matured into a reliable left-sided defender able to play centrally or on the flank, with excellent tackling and heading skills. Unfortunately his neck problem forced him to retire in November 2001.
