Although it took some time to get going Ryan's 2000-01 season appeared to be taking off at the turn of the year when he scored the equaliser for Swansea against Peterborough and seemed to be on the verge of winning a regular place in the first-team squad. However he then had the misfortune to suffer a ruptured medial ligament and a depressed fracture of the tibia in the LDV Vans Trophy match against Reading and the injury put him out of action for the remainder of the campaign. A promising wide-left midfield player he signed a new one-year contract for the Swans in April.
