This forceful young midfielder made an impressive debut for Torquay United early on in 2000-01, rattling Southend's crossbar in the process and retained his place in the squad until the beginning of November. He only featured a couple of times from the subs' bench in the second half of the campaign but made sufficient progress to ensure a professional contract for the coming season. Ryan picked up the Gulls' 'Young Player of the Year' award.
Ryan was released by Torquay in January 2003.
