One of the first big money signings as United became a force in the Premiership, Ruel became an instant hit on Tyneside as he supplied the ammunition for Andrew Cole. He lost his place with the introduction of David Ginola.
Ruel had a superb season at West Bromwich Albion in 2000-01 when his vast experience was a major factor in the club reaching the play-offs. Operating mostly in a free role just behind the front two, he was the instigator of numerous attacking moves, his intelligent passing and thoughtful promptings standing out time and time again. He also delivered many teasing corners and free-kicks to set up chances for the Baggies' prolific strike force. Awarded the captain's armband when Derek McInnes was sidelined by injury he soldiered on towards the end of the campaign despite a nagging groin strain.
