Bentley joined United soon after the war for a record fee for a player coming from outside of the First Division as a virtual unknown. A mobile forward, Bentley skippered Chelsea to their Championship title in 1955.

A Chelsea legend he signed from Newcastle United for £12,500 in January 1948. He could use both feet and was excellent in the air. Captain of the Championship winning side and a leading scorer for the club 8 times in 10 seasons. He holds the club record of scoring in eight consecutive games. He left to join West London neighbours in September 1956.
