Allen graduated from the academy at Tottenham Hotspur and signed professional forms while at the club in March 1996.

He managed to win three England Under-21 caps but could not gain a regular place in the starting line-up.

After just 13 appearances for Spurs, Allen went on loan to Luton Town who were fighting against relegation in March 1998.

Six goals in eight appearances meant that the Hatters avoided relegation and bought him to the attention of the then Portsmouth manager Alan Ball.

Allen joined Portsmouth from Tottenham Hotspur for a £1 million fee in 1999.

He was sidelined for most of his first season with a serious ankle problem which required two operations, and then by a knee problem which also required surgery.

The 2001-02 season was also lost to a series of injuries.
