Simpson succeeded Jack Fairbrother in the United goal in 1951-52 and was to be Gallowgate's first-choice keeper for the next seven seasons. Success came in the form of the FA Cup Final wins in 1952 and 1955. A severe muscle injury appeared to have brought his career to an end. Simpson thought otherwise and went on to win everything on offer at Celtic, including the European Cup in 1967.
