Byrne was captain of the 'Babes' side, who sadly lost his life in the Munich air-crash. A superbly skilful full back blessed with exceptional pace, he was marked down as a great player on his debut. Used as an emergency left wingman in 1952, his fluent goal scoring saw United to their first post-war title. A born leader, he was a natural captain, mature before his time, his speed ensured no wingman bettered him, whilst his smooth passing made him an England regular.
