Now entering the twilight of his career, Robert burst on the scene as a youngster when he was voted Player of the Tournament at the 1987 World Youth Championships. He went on to gain a European Cup winners medal with Red Star Belgrade in 1991 before earning a move to Real Madrid later that year. He remained in Spain for almost a decade, later playing for Real Oviedo, Barcelona and Seville before returning to Croatia to sign for Dinamo Zagreb. Spells with NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac Zagreb and Belgium's Standard Liege followed before he moved to England with Portsmouth at the start of the 2001-02 campaign. Nicknamed 'Glass Legs', Robert won 15 caps for Yugoslavia and has appeared regularly for Croatia since 1993, making a further 40 plus international appearances. A very skilful midfield player who is adept with either foot, he is a specialist with dead-ball kicks. He left Pompey at the end of the 2001-2002 season to play for Grampus 8 in Japan.
