Kovac was born in Berlin but qualifies to play for Croatia through parentage. The talented defender has played the majority his club football in Germany, starting out with 1FC Nurnberg and later spending five years with Bayer Leverkusen before he joined then European champions Bayern Munich for a substantial fee in the 2001 close season.
Kovac made his full international debut against Italy in April 1999.
He is the younger brother of midfielder Niko who has also played for Bayern Munich and Croatia.
