A recruit from the famous Wallsend Boys Club, Robbie made exactly 100 appearances for Newcastle United before departing to Bolton Wanderers.
After a four sojourn in Lancashire, he returned for a second spell at his home town club.
Sidelined with an injury at the start of 2000-01, it was not until October that Robbie returned to action for Bolton Wanderers in 2000-01.
Initially employed at left back, as the season wore on he was switched to a midfield role and adapted well to the change of position.
A tough-tackling player who is also very useful on the ball, he performed consistently throughout the campaign and even grabbed a couple of vital goals for the Wanderers.
Robbie joined Sunderland in August 2006 on a monthly contract that was soon extended to January 2007.
