Dewhurst joined Scunthorpe on a monthly contract in the summer of 2000 and showed his experience and strength at centre-half in pre-season friendlies. His only first team opportunity came in the Worthington Cup tie at Wigan when he was sent off for a professional foul after just 20 minutes. Dewhurst was released by the Iron in September and after a brief spell at Unibond League outfit Gainsborough Trinity he signed for North Ferriby United.
