A former England Youth and Under-21 international, although he had a short run in the Sheffield Wednesday line-up in September 2000, Richie Humphreys was again on the fringes of the first-team squad at Hillsborough in 2000-01 and, in the New Year, he opted for a transfer to Second Division Cambridge United.
He made an instant impact at the Abbey Stadium scoring three goals in seven matches but then suffered a broken bone in his foot at Luton Town that put him out for of the season.
In his 12 years at Victoria Park, Richie made a club record 542 appearances for Hartlepool United.
He joined Chesterfield in July 2013 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2015 in May 2014.
Richie succeeded Clarke Carlisle as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association in November 2013.
