Having been released by Derby County at the end of the 1999-2000 campaign Richard signed for Second Division Oxford United where he had previously enjoyed two successful loan spells. Installed as the U's first-choice 'keeper he produced a string of accomplished displays and apart from a period when he was replaced by the on-loan Neil Cutler he was rarely absent all season. A promising goalkeeper who showed a level of maturity beyond his years he deservedly won the club's 'Player of the Year' award.
