Hughes was one of Bournemouth's key players in the 2000-01 campaign when he was a near ever-present and formed a strong partnership in the centre of midfield with Carl Fletcher.
A talented youngster with a useful left-foot shot he chipped in with some crucial goals during the campaign as the Cherries narrowly missed out on a place in the end-of-season Play-Offs.
He featured regularly for Scotland at Under-21 level winning a further three caps.
Hughes's contract at Portsmouth was extended to June 2007 in July 2004 and to June 2011 in January 2009.
He re-joined AFC Bournemouth in August 2012 with a two-year contract.
