Green signed a new contract for Northampton in the 2000 close season and produced some sterling performances in the Cobblers defence during the 2000-01 campaign, generally featuring in a back three alongside Ian Sampson and Green Hope. A reliable central defender his performances never wavered even after it was announced that he would be released in the summer. Although he was soon snapped up by Rochdale, Green's stint at Spotland proved to be short lived as he was forced to retire in February 2002 due to a back injury.
