He began his career at second division Basanez before moving to Nacional for the 1999 season. He broke into the squad during World Cup qualification and scored the goals that beat Australia in the final qualifying match. He is a tall powerful striker and an ideal target man but may only play a part from the bench.

Richard did so to telling effect in the final Group A game against Senegal. Trailing 0-3 at the interval, he came on and scored with his first touch then, as Uruguay drew level, missed a good chance in added time that would - if taken - have seen them go through to the last 16.
