Gardner spent the first two months of the 2000-01 season recovering from a knee ligament injury sustained in the previous campaign but, once he had recovered fitness, he returned to his old form.
A real box of tricks on the left wing and a firm crowd favourite at the Reebok Stadium, he is one of Bolton Wanderers' brightest and most consistent players.
Always difficult to predict what he will do when he receives the ball, he proved to be one of the most naturally-gifted players in the First Division in 2000-01.
He seemed to thrive in big games, netting vital goals in both rounds of the Play-Offs to help Wanderers back into the Premiership.
Gardner also featured regularly for Jamaica when fit, assisting in their campaign to qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals.
Gardner's contract at Bolton was extended to June 2008 in July 2004, to June 2011 in July 2008 and to June 2012 in July 2011.
