The previous record was jointly held at 15 years and 158 days by Albert Geldard (Bradford Park Avenue v Millwall in Division Two on 16 September 1929) and Ken Roberts (Wrexham v Bradford Park Avenue in Division Three North on 1 September 1951).

Barnsley's previous record holder was Alan Ogley who was 16 years and 226 days when he made his Tykes' debut at Bristol Rovers in the Third Division on 18 September 1962.

His Tykes contract was extended to June 2013 in May 2011 and to June 2015 in February 2013.
