Afolabi began his career at NEPA FC in Nigeria before moving to Belgium to play for Standard Liege in 1997.
His performances led to him being a member of the Nigerian Youth team at the African and World Championships in 1999 and an international debut in June 2000 against Sierra Leone.
He moved to Italy to play for Napoli on loan in 2000 but after an unhappy spell moved back to Standard Liege and established himself as one of the best defenders playing in Belgium.
He was surprisingly left out of the African Nations' Cup Finals.
A graceful no nonsense stopper.
