Kelly played three games in the Lancashire league for Liverpool and the reserves in the 1892-93 season.
Towards the end of the campaign, he was attacked by two members of an opposing team resulting in a leg injury which ended his brief playing career. However, he maintained an active interest in football, working as a trainer for various amateur teams. Later, until his 70s, he served as a talent scout.
