This veteran striker had more or less hung up his boots after taking over as manager at Lincoln in the summer of 2000 but after his dismissal by the new Imps board in March he joined Brighton as a player on non-contract terms. Although no longer possessing the pace that he had earlier in his career he showed that he could still perform a useful role as a target man for a short period in matches and his experience proved valuable to the Seagulls in the run-in to the Third Division title. His appearances were restricted to outings from the subs bench but he increased his tally of goals when he netted with a close range header in the 3-0 win over Hull City. Phil was released at the end of the 2000-01 season.
