By now firmly established in a wing-back role at Middlesbrough, Phil provided useful service in 2000-01 although his appearances were restricted by a series of injuries.
A local lad, his robust all-action style leaves him prone to injury as was the case with his former boss Bryan Robson.
Hard-working and tenacious, Boro' would have no relegation worries if they could field a team of players with as much fire in their bellies as Phil.
His only goal came in the 2-1 home defeat by Leeds United in August.
Phil joined Darlington in October 2005 with a three-month contract that was extended to the end of the season in January 2006.
