Gray impressed in the 2000-01 pre-season matches for Burnley, netting with a spectacular strike in the friendly with Manchester City and going on to hit the equaliser at Bolton on the opening day of the season. He partnered Andy Cooke up front for the Clarets in the first few games but then lost his place once Andy Payton returned from injury and was soon on his way to Oxford where he did well in a struggling side. He scored one of the U's quickest-ever goals when he netted after just six seconds at Bournemouth and went on to finish the campaign as leading scorer with nine goals. A combative and inventive striker he is an excellent leader of the front line. Gray remained a member of the Northern Ireland international squad and won five more caps during the season.

Gray left Oxford United in the 2002 close season and joined Chelmsford City on a one year contract.
