Gilchrist proved a steady deputy in a number of positions for Leicester City in 2000-01 but he was unable was unable to establish a regular place in the starting line-up.
Several clubs tried to prise him from Filbert Street on loan, but he was eventually sold to West Bromwich Albion on the Transfer Deadline Day.
The deal was initially secured as a loan so that the paperwork could be finalised the following day.
He immediately established himself in the centre of defence at The Hawthorns and gave the back line a much more secure look in the closing stages of the campaign.
However, unfortunately for Baggies' fans he was unable to guide the team past Bolton Wanderers in the Play-Offs and a place in the promised land of the Premiership.
Gilchrist retired in December 2007 due to a knee injury.
