Began as a trainee with his home town club of Bury but found himself in non-League football after 18 months.

Played initially for Chorley and then Lancaster City where his ability won him a £25,000 move to NAC Breda.

Despite suffering a broken leg in Holland, his form in the Dutch Premiership was sufficient to persuade Luton Town to pay £100,000 for his services.

Out of favour with Joe Kinnear in 2001-02, Peter was released in January 2002.
