Swan was appointed captain of York City for the 2000-01 season but sadly after just two matches he suffered a serious cartilage injury and following surgery he was forced to retire from the game on specialist's advice. An imposing central defender who occasionally appeared as a striker he made more than 400 appearances in senior football.
