Made his senior debut for Scunthorpe United after joining them from Bolton Wanderers where he had been unable to figure in first team plans.
Peter made his Football League debut for the Iron on the opening day of 2000-01 and was a regular in the squad for the first two months. Effectively used as a substitute, his season was cruelly ended in February when suffered a double compound fracture of the left leg in a reserve game against Grimsby Town. The injury was serious enough to cause the match to be abandoned. Subsequently, Peter decided to retire at the end of the 2001-02 season.
